The Home Depot lighting demonstration...

Jumat, 10 Mei 2013

When most people think about light (like me before I got my first big boy camera) it comes down to it being either bright or dark, but as photographers we quickly learn that it's much more than just light or the absence there of, its about what color (or what temperature) that light is.

Well, when wondering through Home Depot the other day I saw this new display the perfectly demonstrates the color temperature of light.

What's even cooler (no pun intended) is when you stick your hand under each of the lights and see what it does to your skin tone. If you find yourself in Home Depot (or other store with a similar display) you should give it a try.

Click on either image to view larger and better see the "color of light" given off by different light sources.

Seeing these different colors makes it easier to understand why it can be so hard to get the tone of a persons skin correct when you shoot them in a room that has one (or more) of these lights (and even harder when you throw a Speedlight in that mix).

To learn more be sure to check out this really well done article "Reproducing Real World Light".

In the mean time, here is a 8 minute video from one of my favorite guys talking about white balance, Mark Wallace.

Not only does he talk about white balance, but walks you though how to udjust the settings in your camera to componsate/match the light you are shooting under.

A Little Change

Selasa, 07 Mei 2013

As time goes on when blogging you will go through some changes along the way. It is important to grow as a blogger and in your content; that way your blog can be a reflection of you and stay current for your readers.

You may have noticed a few changes here at B.You. A couple of those contributor photos are not there and our 'Say Hello To Us' section is a little bit bare, but we are going through a small transition right now and some changes are being made. We put out a call for contributors and had a great response! Unfortunately we couldn't bring on all of the inquiries and have narrowed it down to two. This week you will see two new faces over there on the sidebar and learn a little bit about them in the 'Say Hello To Us' section.

The changes we are making are small, but will be great for B.You and will not affect the dynamic of of what you have been reading all along. I am excited about this new change and can't wait to start the transition. Thank you all for your patience and sticking with us through this change!

May Featured Blogger

Senin, 06 Mei 2013

Last month we wrote up a post on giveaways and decided to have a fun little giveaway of our own where you could enter to win the chance of being a featured blogger in May. Jerika from Everyday Bay won! So let me introduce you to May's featured blogger:

Hi my name is Jerika! I was born into a military family. My dad was serving in Fort Stewart, Georgia when I was born. I was born on my dads birthday, April 1st. Not too long after I was born my dad got out of the Army and my parents, my older sister and I moved back to my moms hometown in Louisiana. My little brother came into the world a few years later. We grew up in a tiny little town in Central Louisiana. I went to a small school with only 20 or so people in my class. I had the best upbringing a kid could ask for. I went through school being as active and into everything I possibly could. You name it, I did it. I started dancing at the age of four. It was the one thing that I loved and was most passionate about. It consumed my life until I got to high school and I decided that I wanted to have time to do other things as well. I was in every club. I played softball, was a cheerleader, and I was an honor student. I was somewhat of an over achiever. I graduated high school with plans to move away to college. I met my eventual husband right before I graduated. After spending the summer with him and falling head over heels I decided maybe staying home and going to college wouldn't be so bad. I stayed in college a semester and then Shane proposed. We set a date. Planned a big wedding and I bought a beautiful dress. We decided we didn't want to wait any longer and got married a couple of months later in the cutest little quickie wedding you've ever seen. A half a year later we found out we were pregnant with our first baby. I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy this past February. He is the light in my life.

I began blogging as a way to track my pregnancy but quickly lost interest because I didn't have the easiest pregnancy. Now that I am a stay at home mom I am back blogging again about anything that is on my mind that day. I blog mostly about my family and whats going on with us. You will find more about my son, Baylor, than anything else there. I want to document every little thing that happens in his life because I am quickly learning that babies grow so fast.

I am fairly new to blogging and I can't wait to grow my blog and start doing new things with it. The blogging community fascinates me so much and I love becoming a part of it!

Jerika's blog is a sweet daily read and I just love looking at all her cute photos of her baby Baylor! Head on over to Everyday Bay and check it out. Plus, right now she is having a giveaway! Who wants to win a pair of amazing moccs for your little??

Depth of field... in depth...

Today we are going to talk a bit about depth of field, and I'll give you several visual representations of what it looks like.

Here is an image of what the aperture blades look like in a lens (though they are technically known as the "focal plane diaphragm blades"), the wider they are open the more light comes flooding in and the wider the blades are open the more shallow your "focal plane" becomes (meaning the things in front of and behind the object you are focusing on will be blurry).

The lower your f/stop is set (say f/1.4), the wider those blades are open.

The sample images below were shot with a Nikon 60mm f/2.8G AF-S Micro lens, so the lowest the aperture can be set at is f/2.8 (aka "wide open"). When any lens is wide open (lowest f/value) you won't even see the blades, all you'll see is a round hole.

There is also a direct correlation with your f/stop and shutter speed, a lower f/stop (number) will allow you to shoot at a higher shutter speed. When photographing a wedding (or reception) for example you may have low light and don't want to (or can't) use a flash, by dropping your f/stop you can bump up your shutter speed.

I could ramble on, but I am more of a visual kinda guy, so here are a few examples I shot this morning, the lighting was not changed for any of the shots, the only changes were to the f/stop and shutter speed.

Notice that as the f/stop increases the blades begin to close, and if you want to keep the exposure the same you need to decrease the shutter speed, and as this is going on the depth of field becomes deeper.

I am a huge fan of Mark Wallace, in the 7 minute video below he does a very nice job explaining depth of field.
